The Exploration Geophysics team at Curtin University specialises in developing geophysical technologies for subsurface characterisation and monitoring, focusing on CO2 geosequestration, groundwater management, and environmental and energy applications.

Your new role

In this role, you will contribute to several collaborative projects between Curtin University, industry and research partners. You will primarily contribute to research-based activities, including the development of new data analysis algorithms, processing and analysis of field data, and participation in the fieldwork.


Key duties and responsibilities include:
  • Conduct high-quality research in applied seismology in close collaboration with fellow team members.
  • Develop algorithms to process and analyse surface and borehole seismic data obtained with various sensors.
  • Assist in planning, design and implementation of field experiments to collect high quality geophysical data for research projects utilising fibre optic sensors and other geophysical equipment.
  • Deliver coursework in geophysics to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, enhancing their understanding and skills in the field.
  • Provide effective supervision and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students conducting research.
  • Promote and foster relationships with professional bodies, industry partners, affiliated associations, government and the wider community by participating in collaborative activities.
  • Communicate research progress and findings to partners and the geophysical community through reports, journal publications, and conference presentations.
  • Contribute to grant applications for competitive funding opportunities.

Please provide a cover letter, your CV (publication listed) and a separate document (no more than 2 pages) addressing the criteria (noted below) to allow us to assess your suitability for this role.

Essential criteria 

  • PhD (or near completion) in Geophysics or a related field or an equivalent industry experience.
  • A record of excellence in geophysical research as demonstrated by publications in scientific journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • Proficient programming skills, preferably using MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Expertise and experience in developing and implementing algorithms for processing, imaging or inversion of seismic data.
  • Experience, willingness and ability to participate in field acquisition of land and downhole seismic data.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a research team and with fellow professionals and support staff to further the effectiveness of the team.
  • Experience in or commitment to quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Desirable criteria 
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of principles of distributed fibre optic sensing technology.
  • Experience in designing and implementing geophysical surveys (including but not limited to seismic surveys with fibre optic sensors).
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise student research projects.  
  • A history of successful competitive grant applications.
