The Opportunity

As a Research Associate you will conduct research in the field of Hybrid Mathematical Optimisation. You will be working on a project that aims to lead a shift in concrete mix design practice, which is currently focused on mechanical performance objectives, to a holistic approach that maximises durability of concrete alongside its mechanical performance.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your research skills and output across contributing to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals, participating in conferences and workshops, and actively engaging with industry partners. There will also be the opportunity to assist in the supervision of PhD and honours students working on the project.

The role of Research Associate reports to Dr Ailar Hajimohammadi and has no direct reports.

  • Level A, Salary - $99,325 to $106,237 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract – 2 years

Skills & Experience:

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in computer science and/or a relevant engineering discipline (civil, chemical, mechanical, etc)
  • Demonstrated experience in data science including experience in building predictive models, analysing data for trends and patterns and generating information and insights from data sets
  • Demonstrated experience with mathematical and metaheuristic optimisation techniques 
  • High level knowledge of concrete design and broad general knowledge of materials engineering (preferred but not essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
