About the opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake data collection in Wagga Wagga for a research project being conducted by the University of Sydney, Wagga Wagga City Council, Murrumbidgee Local Health District and Transport for NSW.

The purpose is to record information on the types of users, their travel purpose and route, and whether they are walking, cycling, walking dogs, pushing prams, riding skateboards or scooters, etc. Data will be collected using tools developed by the research team.

Working in teams of two you will work one 6.5 hour shift each day which includes one half-hour break. Survey Assistants will alternate between observations and surveying users. Survey Assistants can work ONLY one shift per day on which data collection occurs. The morning shift will be from 6:00am-12:30pm and the afternoon/evening shift from 12:00pm-6:30pm. Data collection will occur on Tuesday and Thursday and both weekend days in a single week on each link (8 shifts per link). Several cycleway/walkway links will be included in the data collection.

Survey Assistants will be able to select the number of shifts that they will be available to work during the data collection period. You will be supported and supervised by research project staff to ensure your safety and that data collection protocols are followed correctly by all survey assistants.

Data collection will occur between Tuesday 10th October and Sunday 30th October approximately, depending on weather conditions and numbers of survey assistants available. You will be required to attend a two-hour training session the week before data collection starts (4th-7th October) for which you will be paid. A few different training timeslots will be available, and dates and times will be confirmed closer to the time. Alternative training arrangements may be possible.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • undertake observations of people using the Wagga Wagga Active Travel Plan cycleways/walkways

  • intercept people using the Wagga Wagga Active Travel Plan cycleways/walkways to undertake a short survey

About you

  • ability to work as part of a team

  • work experience indicating an ability to work with minimal supervision, including a reference from a recent employer

  • good concentration and attention to detail

  • willingness to follow directions and report progress

  • available to work at least 8 shifts (56 hours) between 10th October and 30th October

  • interest in research (optional)
