  • Base Salary $78K - $87K (HEO5) + 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) is seeking a Research Assistant to provide technical and operational support to the Chief Investigator and the team to support the research activity and requirements for the Indigenous Grasslands for Grain project.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • prepare plants, seeds and flour in collaboration with team members

  • perform fundamental aspects of research work, and facilitate the efficient operation of the research laboratory by taking detailed notes and carefully handling samples

  • coordinate activities so that experiments are prepared for and run smoothly, including coordination with the Sydney-based lab technicians and academics

  • assist with maintenance of experimental fields such as weeding and planting

  • coordinate experiments with the local Aboriginal community and occasionally with other landholders

  • assist with public workshops and events whilst maintaining a high level of professionalism and cultural competence.

About you

  • experience in a research-intensive environment or an interest in teaching and working in academia

  • experience in carrying out scientific literary searches and preparing literary reviews for further analysis

  • a working understanding of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation, including Safe Laboratory Practices, as applicable to the work environment

  • strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters

  • the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise  as part of normal daily work

  • Experience working cross-culturally, experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, and ability to work with many diverse stakeholders at the same time.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
