About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual with technical expertise in biological mass spectrometry to join the University of Melbourne's innovative RDMassSpec initiative. You will play a crucial role in the detailed proteomic and metabolomic analyses of patient samples, fast-tracking the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases. Based in the Bio21 Institute and working closely with the Melbourne Mass-Spectrometry & Proteomics Facility and a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians based throughout the Parkville Biomedical precinct, you will have the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research and make a significant impact in the field of precision medicine.  You will receive mentorship for career development and be surrounded by cutting-edge facilities for metabolomics, proteomics, and more.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Work both independently and support RDMassSpec operations and activities overseen by the Stroud and McConville groups.
  • Work closely with the Melbourne Mass-Spectrometry & Proteomics Facility to develop and apply clinical multi-omic approaches.
  • Provide intellectual leadership of defined elements of the RDMassSpec initiative. Co-supervision of honours or postgraduate research projects within research area (subject to completion of a PhD).
  • Actively participate at School and/or Faculty meetings and with guidance, contribute to planning activities or committee work to support capacity-building in the School/discipline.

Who We Are Looking For

You are driven by the opportunity to work independently, executing experiments within broad guidelines, and demonstrate initiative and commitment to achieving scientific goals.

You will also have:

  • Technical experience with the operation of biological mass spectrometry (metabolomics/proteomics) instrumentation.
  • Experience in broad range of biochemistry techniques (protein expression, purification, enzymology).
  • Authorship on at least one peer-reviewed publication (or equivalent).
