Research Assistant - NDARC

Employment Type: Full-time (35 hour week)

Duration: 12 month Fixed Term role

Remuneration: $77,356 - $87,532 (plus 17% superannuation and leave loading)

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) was established at the University of New South Wales by the Commonwealth Government in 1986 to extend the knowledge base required for effective treatment of individuals with alcohol and other drug related problems and to enhance the overall research capacity in the drug and alcohol field. The Centre is highly regarded, both nationally and internationally, for its contribution to drug and alcohol research.

Why your role matters  

As a Research Assistant, you will assist and conduct a range of studies that involve the analysis of data on the outcomes, morbidity and mortality related to the use and injection of opioids (both heroin and pharmaceutical opioids). This work will involve liaison with collaborators in Australia and overseas, and will involve preparation of ethics applications, analysis of data and contribution to peer reviewed publications and presentations. You will contribute to the analysis of a range of datasets in related studies, including (but not limited to) the Pain and Opioids IN Treatment (POINT) study cohort, and the POPPY cohort. It will also involve contribution to systematic reviews of harms related to opioid and other illicit drug use, as well as interventions to reduce such harms.

Who you are

To be successful you must have:

  • A University degree in behavioural sciences, social sciences, epidemiology or equivalent or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in data management and fundamental statistical analyses, including use of SPSS, Stata, SAS or a similar data analysis package.
  • Strong organisational skills including the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully within a team and liaising with other agencies and professionals.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills including the ability to contribute to research outputs and reports for diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to integrity and sensitivity in interacting with marginalised or at-risk populations and about sensitive issues, including in complying with ethical, legal, and policy requirements.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
