The Opportunity

The Faculty of Information Technology has an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join the Department of Software, Systems and Cybersecurity. This position will work on a Discovery Project funded by Defence, NISDRG; the ‘Enhanced Disinformation Detection’ project. This project aims to apply a novel interdisciplinary approach, drawing especially from psychological theory and methods, to learn more about how disinformation can be systematically identified, and how to categorise the clusters of disinformation that are more likely to be believed and spread. The project expects to build upon evidenced-based knowledge on how to detect and counter disinformation in Australia.

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Carry out a systematic literature review
  • Carry out a theoretical and atheoretical content analysis (including identifying content and linguistic/deception cues)
  • Create and run experimental studies to examine individual differences, believability, and propagation of mis/disinformation
  • Work with computer science researchers on the team who will lead research on social networking analysis and NLP (noting you will not be required to have expertise in these methods)
  • Carry out other research relevant to the project
  • Write up and disseminate findings in reports and academic papers
  • Organise dissemination events (e.g., workshops)

The successful applicant will need to have a PhD and/or progress towards a PhD in psychology. They have the opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research. You will need to have a psychology background, with a good understanding of psychological theories (e.g., personality theories, social identity theory and theories of persuasion) and be confident and capable of employing psychological methods – qualitative and quantitative. Whilst you will not be required to have a background in mis/disinformation research, it will be important that you have an interest in this area and a deep knowledge of relevant psychological theories.

If this sounds like a position that suits your current career focus we look forward to hearing from you.
