Reporting to:
Senior Research Fellow in Neuroscience, Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute
Under general direction the Research Assistant will support the team of Dr Arne Ittner, head of the Laboratory for Molecular Memory and Dementia Research (aiLab), at FHMRI Neuroscience with a variety of research support activities.
The Research Assistant will provide experimental and procedural support on research activities using cells, tissue, plasmids and protein that contribute to the understanding of mechanisms of learning and memory and the molecular processes that occur during memory loss in dementia. Our research is supported by National health and Medical Research Council, the Australian research Council, and Flinders Foundation among others.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Assisting in the planning, design and implementation of research projects

  • Design, completion and analysis of laboratory experiments

  • Preparing research-related documentation

  • Liaising with research collaborators and key stakeholders

  • Training students or new staff members in laboratory techniques; providing assistance to colleagues in the same.

  • Contributing to the writing, editing, and final preparation of manuscripts, reports, and other research outcomes for submission to journals and funding bodies.

  • Assisting in the development of grant applications as required.

  • Working in a team with other academic and professional staff.

  • Providing administrative support as necessary, including ordering and laboratory management, and liaising with support administrative staff as required

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Bachelors degree, equivalent or higher in Molecular Biology, Genetics and/or Neuroscience (or any relevant field).

  • Demonstrated ability to apply skills in molecular biology, protein biology and cell biology across a range of tasks and to assist others in the completion of research projects.

  • Demonstrated experience in lab administration/management tasks (ideally in a university setting), including but not limited to ordering lab supplies, managing inventory databases and stocks.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both autonomously and in a team environment, including the ability to provide routine direction to junior staff/students.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritise and complete multiple tasks whilst applying sound judgment and initiative.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform research experiments and handling of laboratory mice

  • Sound communication (written and oral), interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.

  • Computer skills including MS Office and statistical analysis packages.
