Registrar/Senior Registrar/Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Surgery

• Full time (38 hours per week), 12 months fixed term employment, located on the Camperdown Campus

• Base Salary HEO 7/8/9 $106-145K p.a. + 17% superannuation + generous loading for registered specialist

About the opportunity

This position is for a residency-trained small animal surgeon in a team of small animal surgeons that make up the surgical referral service at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney (UVTHS). The majority of time will be spent on clinical duty performing specialist-level surgeries and providing clinical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students at UVTHS including residents, surgical interns, and veterinary students. This role will provide clinical services to clients of the hospital and will train, supervise and assess students during rotations and play a role in the surgery resident training program.

The surgery team assists in development and implementation of the Unit Strategic Plan and participates in its management, including in the development of a case load and a financially viable clinical service. The position also involves engagement in clinical research to further the knowledge of their speciality.

Registrar/ Senior Registrar/ Veterinary Specialist position operates within the School of Veterinary Science’s teaching hospital at the Camperdown campus. The school provides a range of undergraduate & postgraduate degree programs in veterinary & associated disciplines including emergency/critical care, internal medicine, oncology, dermatology, anaesthesiology, diagnostic imaging and primary care. The teaching hospital provides the clinical learning experience for undergraduate students & staff engaged in professional training programs while also providing referral level and best-practice veterinary services to the public. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art operating rooms (remodelled 3 years ago), central sterile facility and ICU. Equipment includes TPLO/THR(CFX/BFX/Helica), locking AO & Fixin plating equipment/ImexSK ESF/CRF and an ILN system. We have state of the art digital arthroscopy/laparoscopy equipment and intra-operative C-arm fluoroscopy. Our imaging suite is equipped with digital radiography, 128-slice helical CT, and MRI. We have access off-site to scintigraphy, PET-CT, intraoperative helical CT, and CT-based 3D printing of bone models as well as implants. Unique to the VTH is a complete feline ICU, postoperative ward and I-131 ward.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• supervise undergraduate and postgraduate clinical trainees on surgical rotations

• provide an effective surgery service for first opinion, second opinion and secondary referral cases

• effective clinical service for hospitalised cases

• take a leadership role with the training of undergraduate & postgraduate students and residents, including practical instruction and demonstrations at Camperdown and Camden campuses

• actively contribute to the management of the surgery unit

• provide support for cases from other clinical services within the University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals.

Registrar in Veterinary Small Animal Surgery (HEO Level 7) who is a veterinarian working with responsibility for his/her own clinical work and outcomes; and who has involvement with clinical instruction, contributes to consultancy and/or research led by senior staff and provides high quality primary accession of clinical services. In addition, you must have:

• a degree in veterinary science registrable in New South Wales, Australia.

• a recent completion of a recognised residency program in small animal surgery

• advanced skills in small animal surgery, and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently in surgery.

Senior Registrar in Veterinary Small Animal Surgery, (HEO Level 8) who is a veterinarian with responsibilities within a specific area of clinical practice, and who provides leadership in his/her chosen discipline as well as being involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training programs. In addition, you must have:

• a degree in veterinary science registrable in NSW

• completion of a recognised residency or intern program in surgery and registration with the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board

• completed at least 12 months experience in small animal surgery since completion of the residency.

Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (HEO level 9) who is a veterinarian with at least partial responsibility for the management of a unit or division, including the management of a range of staff working within the relevant discipline or sub-discipline, who has:

• a degree in veterinary science registrable in NSW

• a diplomate ECVS or Diplomate ACVS or Fellowship of the ANZCVS permitting registration with the NSW Veterinary Scientists Board as a Specialist in small animal surgery

• experience in supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate clinical trainees on small animal surgery.

The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience and knowledge.

The 15% veterinary clinical specialist loading is available once registered as specialist by NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board.
