About the Role
This ARC DP project researches fundamental knowledge and algorithms to underpin the deployment of a novel ablation technology using pulsed lasers to remove paints, in particular tough paints, from surfaces of advanced composite structures, e.g. airframes and turbine blades. It establishes thermal mechanical models to describe ablation mechanisms of pulsed laser removal of the paint. Optimal processing protocols to clean paints with different properties, without damaging the underlying composites, will be determined and demonstrated. It meets a cleaning technology need for this paint-on-composites material system to support retrofitting and re-manufacturing in industry. These are crucial industry requirements.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work on the ARC DP project:
• to develop an effective numerical modelling framework and procedures
• to develop a novel thermo-mechanical model for describing thermal decomposition of paints irritated by laser using different power density and duration, in relation to the thickness and properties of the paints
• to contribute to experimental studies of removal of tough paints from the surface of composite laminates using laser ablation to characterise mechanisms of laser ablation of paints

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years at Level A, Step 1 before being awarded PhD and Level A, Step 3 with a PhD degree.

The fellow may also have opportunity to conduct casual teaching and assist other research activities to develop the skills as required by the supervisors. The Fellow will work under the supervision of Prof. Sarah Zhang and Richard Yang from WSU. The Fellow will also contribute to the co-supervision of the PhD students and Honours students.
