About Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is located within the Division of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The primary role of the OGC is to provide independent legal services to the University across a wide spectrum of university activities, including commercial and technology transactions, research, litigation and disputes, and statutory compliance. The OGC works proactively and collaboratively with its clients to produce viable and tangible solutions that align with the University’s goals and appetite for commercial and other risks.

OGC’s client base is diverse and reflects the broad range of activities the University undertakes.  From working with the academic schools and our international programs to supporting the commercial operations of a modern university, the work is highly engaging and no two days are the same.

About the Role

You will provide high-level professional legal advice and services to senior management of the University with particular emphasis on drafting, negotiating and advising on a range of commercial transactions, and providing general advisory services on a broad range of issues relating to the University’s operations.

You will report to an experienced and innovative Senior Commercial Lawyer and work closely with other OGC lawyers including the General Counsel and Senior Technology and Commercial Lawyer with a blend of autonomy and guidance to meet your level of experience and support your professional aspirations.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have a flexible, collaborative approach and the ability to work with a relatively small team servicing a dynamic university community.

Essential qualifications include a law degree, current NSW practicing certificate, and a minimum 4 years’ post admission experience together with demonstrated ability in negotiating and drafting commercial legal documents and providing legal advice on a wide range of commercial matters.  Experience working in a large and complex organisation will be an advantage.
