The Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Mycorrhizal Phenotyping position is part of an ARC-funded Future Fellowship project. The project is entitled “Understanding mycorrhizal phenotypes using functional traits” and aims to develop a new framework linked to tangible, measurable traits of beneficial plant-fungal partnerships that lead to empirical predictions. The project expects to deliver an understanding of how ecological strategies of plant-fungal partnerships control plant productivity and soil nutrient cycling.

The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow who will have responsibility for collecting and analysing data on plant and fungal traits in a range of experiments conducted under field-based and controlled environments. The position will also have responsibility for development and refinement of methods for obtaining fungal trait data, including biochemical and image analyses, and for maintaining and enhancing a growing collection of fungal cultures. Expected research outputs include well-documented methods for generation and analysis of trait data, submission of research data to public repositories and peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals.

The position incumbent will have opportunities to collaborate widely with academics both within and external to HIE and will contribute to the supervision of two PhD students also working on the project. The Fellow will communicate findings at scientific meetings and publish research in high-impact international journals. A tailored career mentoring plan will be developed and will include opportunities to contribute to teaching and supervising Masters and PhD students as well as leadership and engagement.
