About us

The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and a key participant in the international SKA project.

Your new role

The successful candidate will play a key role in providing support to CIRA’s internal people and administration processes, working closely with the CIRA Executive, teaching and research staff, students and internal and external stakeholders. This role includes a high level of autonomy and the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a mature and professional approach to challenges and conflicting priorities.

The Project Officer will


  • Act as a point of contact for CIRA staff enquiries, providing timely and accurate assistance.
  • Coordinate and assist in processes for recruitment, onboarding and exit of employees, in close liaison with Curtin’s central People and Culture department.
  • Collaborate with management to address CIRA staff and student concerns and grievances, with the aim of maintaining a positive and productive work environment.
  • Management of records and documentation, ensuring compliance with Curtin’s policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of diversity, inclusion and equity principles and initiatives aimed at enhancing CIRA staff and student engagement and satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
  • Support CIRA’s administration team and processes, including ad hoc cover of Admin Support Officer.

Essential Criteria:
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience working in a similar role.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with staff and students at all levels.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Understanding and demonstration of management of sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Mature and professional approach to challenges and conflicting priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • The ability to develop strong and collegial relationships within the wider organisation.
Desirable Criteria:
  • A background in people logistics (onboarding and offboarding).
  • Understanding of office resource allocation and coordination.
  • Exposure to working in a tertiary environment and dealing with central service departments.
