The Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute).

Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, skin pathogens, and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Our researchers come from diverse backgrounds, including discovery research and basic scientists, clinician-researchers, epidemiologists, public health physicians, and microbiologists.

About the Role

The Department of Infectious Diseases based at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty Institute) is seeking to appoint a Finance Project Officer to work across the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)-funded projects, COMBAT-AMR and SPARK. These projects focus on capacity building and health systems strengthening in the region. The Project Finance Officer will ensure efficient and accurate financial reporting and management across these projects.

The Project Finance Officer, with direction from the COMBAT-AMR and SPARK Project Managers, will engage in the financial management and reporting across a range of project activities to ensure the ongoing financial sustainability of these projects. They will be involved in planning processes and managing budgets, financial reporting, and administrative operations, including the use of the University of Melbourne's financial management processes.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting the processing of day-to-day financial transactions for the projects, working in conjunction with University Financial Services
  • Executing internal financial transfer of funds
  • Preparing and presenting financial reports as required and comparing financial performance to budget and forecast for projects
  • Analysing and assessing financial performance, highlighting risks, opportunities and recommending actions where necessary
  • Facilitate budget tracking across all project activities

About You

You will be an experienced professional with a background in budgeting and forecasting. You will have a high level of attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to work in complex environments and with a project team. You will be able to plan and organise efficiently, manage competing priorities, and complete projects within stringent timeframes.

You will also have:

  • Graduate qualifications in Finance, Accounting, or another relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of tertiary qualifications and relevant experience
  • Experience working in a tertiary institution
  • Expertise in managing financial portfolios for individual projects, from development to the reporting process.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate timely customised reports for management on budget, actual and forecast
  • High-level computer skills, particularly in relation to Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.
