About the opportunity

The University Archives is a part of Archives and Records Management Services (ARMS) in the University Governance Office within the Vice-Chancellor & President’s Division.

The primary goal of the Archives is the care and preservation of the University’s records of continuing value and making these records accessible for research and education.

As the Project Archivist you will play a key role in working with anthropology records documenting Australian First Nations Peoples and creating and editing existing archival metadata to make these records discoverable as well as preparing these archival records for digitisation.

This is an exciting and challenging role and your opportunity to make a significant, long-term contribution to the University and First Nations history preservation as a whole.

About you

  • experience in working with projects to support cultural collections, archives collections or library collections and clear understanding of cultural heritage and the protections and sensitivities that apply to projects involving First Nations materials.
  • high-level oral and written communication skills, including a strong understanding of the cultural sensitivities that apply to First Nations records.
  • an ability to work independently without direct supervision as well as part of a small team
  • ability to prioritise and organize work to meet deadlines
  • research skills and experience using a variety of sources including archival records

Desirable

  • experience with archival descriptive work or related information management profession
  • preparation of archival records for digitisation by external vendors and their quality control on completion.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
