College of Medicine and Public Health
The Senior Lecturer/Program Director will be a key member of staff in Rural and Remote Health in the College.
In addition to contributing to quality research endeavours, the incumbent will, provide leadership and oversee the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student recruitment, pathways, admissions processes, support, and retention in the Flinders Doctor of Medicine (MD).
This is a critical role with an emphasis on collaboration and coordination with relevant University stakeholders and external partners to increase the effectiveness of admission pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students into medicine at Flinders University, and to ensure best practice approaches to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student success in medicine.
This position will be located in the College of Medicine and Public Health, and work closely with the Dean (Education), Dean and Deputy Dean Rural and Remote Health, the Director of the Medical Program, and the Director, Medical Education and Training (NT).
The incumbent will also work directly with staff from the Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement, including the Coordinator, Yunggorendi Student Engagement, staff from the Poche SA + NT centre, including the Director and Elders on Campus, and the Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, and staff from the Office of Student Recruitment.
The incumbent will also be involved in teaching in Rural and Remote Health, including development of teaching materials, delivery of lectures/tutorials or other innovative teaching and learning strategies, examinations and may be involved in placement education.
The incumbent will be involved in strengthening existing partnerships or exploring new partnerships with external stakeholders that have potential for providing improved teaching, learning and/or research outcomes for the University.

Key Position Responsibilities

Academic

The Program Director is accountable for:

  • Lead the development, management and evaluation of the strategy and program development initiatives for enhancing recruitment, retention, and support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the Doctor of Medicine;

  • Lead and develop strategies and procedures specific to the management of the Indigenous Entry Scheme in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement and the Office of Student Recruitment, and relevant staff in the College of Medicine and Public Health;

  • Manage and coordinate the components of the Indigenous Entry Scheme relevant to the NTMP program including the Preparation for Medicine Program (PMP) and Flinders University Extended Learning in Science (FUELS) program;

  • Build relationships with staff across Flinders University sites in South Australia and the Northern Territory to enhance coordination of programs and improve communication;

  • Further develop relationships with Charles Darwin University in relation to the Northern Territory Medical Program (NTMP) admission pathways and the Bachelor of Clinical Science;

  • Develop monitoring and evaluation mechanisms related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student admission pathways, program outcomes and relevant accreditation standards;

  • Further develop relationships with key industry partners and peak bodies including the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA), Rural Doctors Workforce Agency (RDWA) and Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA) in addition to developing partnerships with community stakeholders;

  • Advise on marketing and recruitment strategies for promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student pathways into medicine at Flinders University, and liaise with staff from the Yunggorendi Student Engagement team to optimise schools engagement and recruitment activity focussed on careers in health and medicine;

  • Liaise with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and student bodies to seek involvement in College initiatives;

  • Contributing to the planning, delivery and evaluation of lectures, tutorials, laboratory-based material or other teaching strategies, including placement education for topics, primarily within the suite of undergraduate and/or postgraduate topics/courses and undertake topic coordination.

  • Participating and contributing to ethical, high quality and innovative research and evaluation through activities such as scholarship, quality publication, external grant acquisition and presentation that aligns with the College areas of research strength and focus and contribute to supervision of student research programs.

  • Actively participating in College internal and external quality assurance and accreditation processes.

  • Actively contribute to the integration and management of aspects of the academic and administrative life of the College.

  • Some out of hours work (including weekends) as well as rural SA, interstate and overseas travel, may be required.

  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Professional

  • Demonstrated capability and/or experience with program monitoring and evaluation in the higher education sector.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and competency associated with recruitment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students into health and medical programs and how this supports College objectives.

  • Significant track record and demonstrated evidence of successful relevant teaching experience at tertiary level, including responsibility for topic coordination, course coordination and curriculum design (academic position)

  • Demonstrated experience and successful track record in supervision of honours and higher degree students to successful completion. (academic position)

  • Demonstrated evidence of a strong research track record (for career stage) in an area aligned with research strengths in health and/or including evidence of sustained high-quality publications and attraction of external competitive grants. (academic position)

  • Demonstrated understanding of the nexus between teaching and learning, research, and scholarship.

  • Demonstrated delivery of support and effective management of matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with staff, students and industry nationally and/or internationally.

Prescribed Conditions of Employment:

Northern Territory Government legislation (the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007) now requires all individuals in child related employment or whose duties involve, or are likely to involve, contact with a child, to hold a valid ‘Working with Children Clearance’ (Ochre Card). This position involves child related work and is assessed as requiring a Working with Children Clearance/Ochre Card.

It is a requirement of this position that the incumbent maintain a valid National Police Certificate which is satisfactory to the University.
