The Sydney School of Health Sciences is the largest in the Faculty of Medicine and Health. We aim to graduate outstanding health professionals who will be innovative leaders, bringing the creative and collaborative change needed to improve health outcomes for all. Accredited professional entry-level courses include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, medical imaging sciences, exercise physiology and sports sciences. Our strategic direction is to build on existing success as a national and international leader in health science education and research to transform health systems and services with solution focused, evidence-based approaches to improve health and quality of life.
The Discipline of Occupational Therapy comprises emerging and established academics who teach entry-level courses in occupational therapy at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Graduates are eligible for registration as occupational therapists in Australia and programs are accredited by the Occupational Therapy Council of Australia and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. In addition, the discipline developed and leads the interdisciplinary major in Disability and Participation which is offered to across the university and is the first of its kind in Australia. Academics within the Discipline of Occupational Therapy are engaged in profession-focused and interdisciplinary research in disability, communicable and non-communicable disease, healthy and inclusive communities, child and family wellbeing, mental health, professional and interprofessional education.
We are seeking to appoint a distinguished senior academic as Professor or Associate Professor in Occupational Therapy to join our multi-disciplinary team in a teaching and research role. The position requires a highly motivated academic whose responsibility will include strategic leadership in research and scholarship, teaching, academic administration and community engagement. The successful applicant will be expected to build research capacity and productivity within the Discipline, build a collaborative team of research students and Post-Doctoral staff.
The successful candidate will be involved in teaching, research and engagement activities consistent with Faculty of Medicine and Health baseline and aspirational performance descriptors for their Level of appointment. As an appointment in the Discipline, you will contribute to advancing the academic and professional reputation, visibility and impact of occupational therapy in health and human services. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in interdisciplinary research within the school and faculty, across the University, and with our national and international partners.
About you (skills, capabilities and experience)
The successful candidate will have a background in occupational therapy and be a leader and influencer in their specialist area of practice. Preference will be given to candidates with outstanding achievement in research leadership including a track-record of externally funded research, development of inclusive research teams, successful outcomes for higher-degree research graduates, superior research metrics by field and evidence of contribution to the development of evidence-informed policy/practice and education in occupational therapy or aligned enquiry.
The successful candidate will be a leading authority within their area of expertise and have an international reputation for excellence. You will be expected to maintain your reputation by actively contributing to research and scholarship, academic debate, policy development and innovation within the University and the broader community. You must hold a PhD in a field relevant to occupational therapy from a recognised tertiary institution. You should be eligible for registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Term and remuneration
The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The appointment is also subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees
The selected candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
