The Opportunity

The role of Professor of Critical Digital Infrastructure is a leadership role within the School of Computer Science and Engineering who is expected to lead the development and leadership of the proposed centre for Critical Digital Infrastructure in UNSW, supported by generous philanthropic donations. The successful candidate will be a recognised research leader with an outstanding track record in excellent publications which have demonstrated impact and competitive funding. The position will contribute to leadership, service and academic administrative functions in the School of Computer Science and Engineering. 

Critical Infrastructure consists of systems and assets including physical facilities, supply chains, information technologies and communication networks which are vital to the economic and social well-being of the nation. Such infrastructure includes transport (roads, bridges, airports, ports, traffic controllers, intelligent transport systems), utilities (telecommunications, dams, wastewater, water supply), energy (generation, transmission and distribution, gas production), storage facilities/schools/healthcare/retail and manufacturing facilities. A range of digital and physical assets help underpin the effective management and use of such critical infrastructure including the Internet backbone, fixed broadband and mobile networks e.g. new distributed antenna systems, data centres and cloud computing/stores, digital services, software systems, applications and platforms, end user devices, satellite systems along with embedded and IoT systems. 

Within this, Critical Digital Infrastructure consists of the hardware and software which makes up these systems or system of systems with many dependencies and interdependencies. More specifically, such digital technologies increasingly make use of open-source technologies to accelerate development and deployment times. By relying on goodwill efforts of volunteers, effectively it ultimately means that extremely critical services are dependent on software libraries that are not adequately supported and maintained for the jobs they are being asked to perform. 

The Professor appointed to this role will have interests in research to improve software quality, stability, scalability and sustainability in the context of Open-Source Software and Open Systems. CSE already has outstanding work in relevant fields, for example with adaptive systems, operating systems for reconfigurable computers, open-source compilers, the world’s first operating-system kernel with mathematical proof of implementation correctness, autonomous robotics systems and the world’s fastest operating system microkernel in seL4. This role complements our ongoing activities and by creating a new centre can help to integrate and amplify these research areas.

The School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is the largest School in the Faculty of Engineering with over 3,400 students and 56 full time academic staff with an operating budget of over $20 million. CSE is undergoing a period of expansion, advertising and recruiting for 9 new academic staff in 2021.

The role of Lecturer reports to the Head of School, Professor Aaron Quigley and has no direct reports.

Skills & Experience

  • PhD degree or equivalent doctoral qualification in an area related to Computer Science.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • A distinguished record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence and deliver research leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Record of experience in one or more of the following areas Open Source Software, Operating Systems, Programming languages and Compilers or Software Engineering.
  • Strong record of understanding of Open Source Software Development, ecosystems and community.
  • Outstanding record of recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
  • Demonstrated experience with industry or work-integrated learning.
  • Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work and influence across disciplines, Faculties, institutions, industry and professional accreditation bodies.
  • Evidence of being an inspirational role model for other academics seeking mentoring, guidance, advice and support.
  • Proven leadership of research projects and leadership of research teams, including high quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research projects.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policy and programs as they relate to staff and students.
  • Proven leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community, with success in attracting significant industry funding.
  • Proven expertise in providing significant input to strategic and operational planning, and developing associated strategic papers and policy.
  • Proven enthusiastic leadership by example in a values-led organisation, with the ability to motivate and train team members to establish priorities and manage competing deadlines for self and others.
  • Ability and capacity to direct and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the safety management system.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Willingness to undertake any compliance and supervisor training as required.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
