About the opportunity

Founded in 1915, Sydney Conservatorium of Music (SCM) was based on the model of the European Conservatoire. Its establishment revolutionised Australian music training where comprehensive performance-led teaching, virtuosity and music education were made available to musicians aged 3 to 90.

The first opera series in Australia began at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Several of Australia's most prominent musicians studied at the Conservatorium and have gone on to work with international ensembles such as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Opera Australia, Ensemble Offspring and more. Musica Viva successfully launched their first chamber music series in the Verbrugghen Hall.

In 1990, Sydney Conservatorium of Music amalgamated with the University of Sydney, but it was only in 2005 when the Music Department and the Conservatorium united. Now a unified research institution, research and the advancement of knowledge are integrally linked to teaching and performance.

The Professor of Conducting (Education Focused) will be involved in the artistic leadership of the Conservatorium focusing on our large ensembles program and conducting pedagogy. Recognised with an international reputation as a creative leader in conducting, the areas of conducting experience will include a focus on wind symphony, large ensemble music (including non-western music such as Chinese music ensemble), musical theatre and opera, newly composed music, and the emerging music styles of the twenty-first century. The successful applicant will join a conducting team that already has expertise in opera, symphonic music, and choral music. A key role will be the development of conducting programs in our undergraduate regular curriculum, postgraduate student conductors, and conductors in the community.

The Professor of Conducting (Education Focused) will have experience in a wide range of genres and styles and will have held extensive professional conducting roles and/or experience conducting high quality tertiary student ensembles.

The Professor of Conducting (Education Focused) dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with a minimum of 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement. Additionally, you will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.

Successful candidates will join the Sydney Horizon Educators cohort. For further insights into this exciting opportunity, we invite you to watch this video .
