Curtin’s School of Nursing is the longest established school of nursing in the Australian university sector. From the time it opened 47 years ago, the school has been a key part of the University’s drive to be a leader in health sciences education and research. The school delivers a range of undergraduate courses in nursing, oral health therapy and paramedicine; and specialist postgraduate courses in areas ranging from diabetes and critical care to child health and midwifery.
Women and Newborn Health Service, King Edward Memorial Hospital
The Women and Newborn Health Service provides services at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). KEMH is the State's tertiary/quaternary maternity, gynaecological, neonatal, and perinatal mental health hospital and treated its first patients in 1916. Today more than 6000 births take place at the hospital every year and it is Western Australia's only major referral centre for high-risk pregnancies. KEMH also has the largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Southern hemisphere, designed to care for premature and sick infants. OPH is a general hospital with approximately 1500 births each year.
Your New Role
The successful candidate will be focused on midwifery leadership, education and research and will be co located at the Curtin School of Nursing and the Women and Newborn Health Service at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH). You will work closely with the innovative midwifery team and facilitate collaborative projects with the clinical staff, and Curtin University staff and students. You will have the opportunity to grow your own research agenda, contribute to the development of the midwifery program and be a leader of the discipline.
In this role you will:
- Lead and collaborate on the development of major grant proposals and smaller grant projects.
- Conduct and manage clinically focussed research.
- Supervise Curtin enrolled higher degree by research students.
- Publish research reports and papers.
- Lead and support research related activities within the Women and Newborn Health Service
To apply for this role, you are required to hold a current NMBA registration with an interest and experience in teaching and research. You will require a current Working with Children Check for this position or an ability to obtain this.

- A doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline (or equivalent accreditation).
- Registered as a Midwife with NMBA (or the equivalent Australian health professional regulatory authority).
- Demonstrated achievement in the discipline/field through the scholarly development and delivery of high quality educational courses.
- An established record of highly productive research outputs with regular publication in high quality refereed academic journals, or outputs in other creative outlets, consistent with an international reputation in the field.
- A significant record of obtaining research income, including nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships.
- Demonstrated academic leadership experience in the discipline/profession and in community engagement.
- Significant experience and record of providing supervision to higher degree research students.
- Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to foster the development of a collegial and supportive working environment and the ability to interact with students and staff with cross cultural sensitivity.
