Reporting to the Head of Department, Department of Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, the Northern Clinical School is responsible for all student affairs such as rostering, teaching arrangements, examinations and assisting and counselling students as required.

The MD was launched in 2011 as the first Australian medical course at masters level, the Melbourne MD created a new benchmark in 21st century medical education. Ten years later, it was time to take the educational lead once again by introducing our redesigned MD course, offering unprecedented levels of flexibility to those beginning their medical career.

About the Role

The Teaching Specialist will support the coordination, teaching, assessment, timetabling and curriculum development of procedural skills at the Northern Clinical School. The Teaching Specialist will be required to work closely with all teaching staff, clinical partners and students in furthering the goals and objective of the Melbourne Medical School. This will be achieved through the provision of high-quality service and coordination as outlined in the position description.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and providing teaching in the areas of procedural skills and resuscitation medicine for the MD students
  • Liaising and consulting with teaching, clinical, and professional staff within the Melbourne Medical School and Northern Clinical School regarding course/subject/clinical requirements.
  • The production of conference and seminar papers and publications and presentations at conferences and seminars where appropriate
  • Implementing the policies of the Melbourne Medical School, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS), and the University particularly the medical curriculum and its development.

About You

You will possess highly developed interpersonal skills with excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to maintain confidentiality. You will bring your excellent organisational skills with the ability to engage students and work effectively with staff members, as a member of a team. Your commitment to and experience in medical education, curriculum development and delivery and assessment in a clinical setting will be a valuable asset to this position.

You will also have:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse Division One with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority.
  • A strong background in clinical work with current competence in clinical and procedural skills.
  • Experience in teaching procedural skills, resuscitation skills and simulation in the acute hospital environment.
  • Experience in patient bedside teaching and supervision of students performing invasive procedural skills on patients.
  • Experience in teaching in a tertiary education organisation with the ability to engage students and demonstrate initiative and innovation with varying teaching styles
