The University of Southern Queensland’s Cyber Security team is seeking a dynamic Principal Cyber Security Engineer to join their team. Responsible for the proactive and reactive identification of cyber threats, our Cyber Security team plays a crucial role in minimising cyber risk and developing cyber resilience across the University.

  • You have a deep understanding of cyber security principles, technologies, and best practice as well as practical hands-on experience with security infrastructure, tools and technologies.
  • You are a strategic thinker with the ability to assess and manage risks effectively.
  • You are a highly effective communicator with the ability to work collaboratively to foster a culture of security awareness across the University. 

What you’ll do

Together with the Director (Cyber Security), you will proactively evaluate, develop and implement ICT Services cyber security policies and procedures to strengthen the security of all University locations, communications networks, systems and applications. You will also:

  • Lead the effective proactive monitoring and auditing of systems, applications, data and voice communications networks, physical and electronic access, and ICT related projects for operational cyber security performance.
  • Deploy and support best practice cyber security controls currently including PKI, Application Delivery Controllers, Firewalls, SIEM, SOAR, EDR, Antivirus/Antimalware, Spam filtering and Web filtering technologies.
  • Lead and support the investigation of operational cyber security violations and computer crimes.
  • Lead incident response programs and coordinate response activities in the event of a security incident.

What will help you succeed

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification with extensive experience in the provision of IT Security or Cyber Security services for a large complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading and performing attack and penetration testing against applications, servers and network infrastructure as well as a strong understanding of OWASP vulnerabilities and remediation.
  • Extensive practical experience in managing and deploying network security controls.
  • Strong leadership skills to lead and inspire a team of cyber security professionals.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills and ability to anticipate strategic risks.

Salary: Total remuneration range $156,435 to $173,403 pa (includes salary range of $132,180 to $146,517 pa, employer super contributions of 17% and annual leave loading)
