The University is welcoming applications for multiple Postgraduate Teaching Fellow positions within the School of Mathematics and Statistics. The Postgraduate Teaching Fellows contribute to the teaching and learning efforts of the School of Mathematics and Statistics through the provision of undergraduate tutorials; preparation and design of tutorial materials and quizzes; exam preparation and marking; as well as assisting with academic administration and supporting the work of the Director of First Year. Training is provided by the School, with ongoing support throughout the year by academic staff involved in the teaching program. Teaching Fellows are expected to tutor in areas of first year Mathematics and/or Statistics and may be provided with lecturing opportunities later in their appointment.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • conduct and prepare first-year tutorials

  • contribute to design and/or implementation of quizzes and examinations

  • conduct examination marking

  • respond to student enquiries

  • undertake administrative functions

  • participate in University events and outreach activities, such as Open Days

  • prepare online and/or in-person training modules or contributing to tutorial rewrites/updates.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sydney is one of the largest in Australia. It has more than 89 academic staff to supervise research and teaching 74 postgraduate students and 925 equivalent full-time student-load undergraduate students.

About you

  • enrolled for a PHD, MSc, or MMathSci at the University of Sydney at the time of application

  • not completed more than 2 years of their postgraduate candidature

  • potential to conduct original research and/or engage in scholarly activity

  • an ability to tutor undergraduate units in mathematics and/or statistics

  • an understanding of the subject-matter within mathematics and/or statistics

  • organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail

  • a proven excellence in both written and verbal communication

  • a developing knowledge and understanding of contemporary pedagogical practice and design.

Desirable:

  • experience in the use of Latex or TeX

  • capabilities in programming and IT experience, particularly symbolic algebra packages (e.g. Matlab, Maple and/or Mathematica), and/or statistical programming languages (e.g. R, Python), and/or online learning support systems (e.g. Canvas, Ed and Webworks).
