Offer Description

(Level A) $75,888 - $102,040 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.

Full Time|Fixed Term Position for up to 36 months.

The School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate, Level A to design automation for personalised messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine manufacturing system. This position is supported by a MRFF project with BioCina.

The MRFF project will engineer a fully automated continuous-flow system to produce small-scale, bespoke, mRNA vaccines. This involves both the production of mRNA (upstream process) and mRNA encapsulation and formulation (downstream process) with each of these processes including multiple distinct ‘unit operation’ which are integrated in a chip to stream the process. The automation for the whole systems is required to ensure correct temperature, pH, concentration of mRNA used and automatic monitoring systems are to be developed and applied.

We seek an early-career scientist/engineer with a proven track record in (Process) Control Systems Design. The successful candidate will work on the development of automatic manufacturing process of this miniaturised mRNA vaccine factory and will have a strong background in process control or automation. Their skillset will complement the University's considerable existing expertise in process control engineering, digital twinning and automation as well as be compatible with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) of the mRNA vaccines.

The successful candidate will be able to showcase their excellent communication, project management, and leadership skills in this role.

To be successful you will need:

  • Ability to analyse and communicate research outcomes, as demonstrated by a high-quality track record of publications in the fields of control system engineering and automation, and a demonstration of ongoing research activities within that field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and research experience in designing process control systems.
  • Experience or substantial knowledge in designing automatic control and monitoring systems for chemical processes which involve fluid flowrate, temperature, pH and concentration level control.
  • Experience or substantial knowledge in hardware programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good laboratory practice and ability to maintain accurate records of laboratory work.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations. 


  •  PhD in mechanical/electrical/chemical engineering or related field to control system engineering from reputable universities.
