About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Officer to develop innovative environmental monitoring approaches to solve real-world challenges in freshwater, coastal and offshore systems.

The position will involve close collaboration with a range of stakeholders from business, government and community. The research will exploit the major advancements in IoT sensor technology and develop novel monitoring approaches that meet critical gaps in our monitoring of reservoir sedimentation, stream flow during extreme events, offshore aquaculture and renewable energy operations. It will also provide innovative capability in the application of IoT sensor technology to both operational and monitoring processes in freshwater, coastal and offshore environments and maintain UQ’s position of leadership in this space. The incumbent will support Academics within the Environmental Engineering discipline, School of Civil Engineering improve research output and, in particular, the delivery of key research partnerships.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research

  • Support a research program in the areas of (i) computer vision (ii) innovative water quality monitoring solutions (iii) adaptive monitoring and modelling of aquatic systems.

  • Undertake fieldwork in a number of remote locations both regionally and overseas.

  • Communicate results and project progress to project stakeholders, through development of project reports, project meetings and presentations.

  • Publish scholarly papers related to this research area in high quality outlets.

  • Expand the research programme including through contributions to external funding applications.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint further research projects.

  • Support other colleagues with the administration of current research and consultancy projects.

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrate personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

  • Effectively lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • Work to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.

  • Show leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit.

  • Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.

  • Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

  • Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.

  • Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

About You

Essential

  • PhD (or near completion) in water engineering or IoT sensor technology.

  • Experience in field deployments of sensor systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in sensor development and autonomous monitoring, and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: field robotics, computer vision, water quality monitoring, environmental modelling.

  • Demonstrated leadership in research projects, evidence of contribution to research, a scientific publication record and an ability to write high quality scientific articles.

  • Ability to rapidly learn and apply new skills, high attention to detail and a methodical but expeditious approach to research work.

  • A high level of drive and enthusiasm and an effective ability to time manage and prioritise demands.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues and research students, including those from different disciplines, as well as with administrative and technical staff and external research partners.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

Desirable 

  • Strong background in field studies focusing on IoT sensor development and deployment. 

  • Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop co-operative research initiatives and maintain research partnerships. 

What We Can Offer 

There are 2x full-time (100%) fixed-term positions available through to 31 December 2023 at an Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $72,144.35 to $96,530.67 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of $84,408.89 to $112,940.88 per annum.
