An exciting opportunity for a researcher exists in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University. We are seeking a qualified researcher to join a team with an international reputation for producing high quality research outcomes in the area of category theory.

The successful candidate will work on the project "Categorical Foundations of Forward Differentiation and Reverse Differentiation" and will collaborate with members of Macquarie University's Centre of Australian Category Theory (CoACT) to advance the scientific program supported by the research grant (FA9550-24-1-0008). Applications from candidates with expertise in the areas of (reverse) differential categories, tangent categories, Differential Linear Logic and the differential lambda-calculus, or foundations of machine learning/automatic differentiation are particularly encouraged. The position also comes with funding for research related travel and activities.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a vigorous contribution to the overall activities of the CoACT, to present research progress regularly at the Australian Category Seminar and to publish papers in well-regarded mathematical journals and computer science conferences. Where appropriate the appointee may also be asked to assist with the mathematical supervision of the CoACT's PhD research students.

This position is suitable for both those with postdoctoral experience and those who have recently completed (or will soon finish) their PhD. We very much look forward to hearing from applicants who have demonstrated excellence in their past research, ability to publish in the scientific literature, experience of presenting research results at scientific meetings, strong written and oral communication skills, and who are keen to engage in a project that involves potential collaboration with academic and industry partners.

About Us

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is a young and dynamic faculty driven by the spirit of discovery. Here we nurture the next generation of science and technology innovators. From a handful of students on the University's first day, the Faculty now serves over 8,000 students across all our courses.

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University is a vibrant and innovative community that is nationally and international recognised for our areas of research excellence. The school includes Mathematicians, Astronomers, Physicists and Statisticians, who develop theoretical and practical tools for solving problems in diverse fields of application. We collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally with academic and industrial partners across the whole spectrum of mathematical and physical sciences.

Macquarie is a university engaged with the real and often complex problems and opportunities that define our lives. Since our foundation 59 years ago, we have aspired to be a different type of university. Over the years, we've grown to become the centre of a vibrant local and global community. • Ability for analytical thinking and independent problem solving.

Additional Essential Selection Criteria for appointment at Level B

  • A track record of high-quality research and excellent publications.
  • Ability to foster a nurturing environment for research students including the provision of research student supervision.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Experience in category theory related research, including (but not limited to) differential categories; Cartesian differential categories; tangent categories; or foundations of automatic differentiation/machine learning.
