PRIMARY DETAIL

• An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated and proactive Postdoctoral Fellow to join a dynamic Faculty of Science and Engineering research team
• Salary Package: Level A step 6 (PhD) from $95,706 to $102,570., plus 17% employer’s Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Appointment Type: Full-time, 3 years fixed term
• Macquarie University (North Ryde location)

THE ROLE

Macquarie University is seeking a suitably qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a talented and dynamic team within the Department of Computing.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Cyber Security Hub, you will:

•   In collaboration with senior academic staff, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to the Cyber Security Hub leading to novel and important scientific outcomes.

•   Publish research outcome in prestigious conferences and journals in the domain of Distributed systems Security and Information privacy, privacy-preserving technologies, Robust and secure machine learning, and related areas.

•   Engage with Undergraduate and Higher Degree Research students to foster collaboration amongst the team members and jointly work on innovative Secure and privacy-enhancing technologies.

•   Design, evaluate and build resilient, secure and private machine learning algorithms for effective and robust human-machine collaboration.

About You

You will have completed (or soon to complete) a PhD in a related discipline. You will assist and collaborate with a team of world-renowned researchers to work on different aspects of cybersecurity and privacy enhancing technologies from the development of theoretical frameworks with cryptographic or information theoretic approaches, to the empirical and data-driven analysis of real-life applications and datasets.

You research one of the following areas (or their intersection): computer security, Information theory, machine learning, or human-computer interaction. You will join a world-class interdisciplinary and multi-institution AUSMURI project which aims to make basic research discoveries across adversarial machine learning, cybersecurity, explainable AI exploring tradeoffs between Information Leakage prevention and Trustworthy ML, Formal verification, mathematical psychology, and human-computer interaction.

About the Project

The Cybersecurity Assurance for Teams of Computers and Humans (CATCH) joint MURI-AUSMURI sits across 7 universities in Australia and the U.S. The Australia-US Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (AUSMURI) is funded by the Defence Next Generation Technology Fund (NGTF) and administered by the Australian Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources for $3m over 3 years, led by the University of Melbourne, with Macquarie University and the University of Newcastle as partners. The chief investigators at Macquarie are Prof Dali Kaafar and A/Prof Shlomo Berkovsky.

Essential

  • A PhD (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Computer Science, Mathematics or statistics, Information Security/Privacy, or Information Technologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas: Cybersecurity, distributed systems measurement and analysis, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, or human-computer interaction.
  • Demonstrated experience in the collection and processing of large data sets, development of efficient algorithms on large datasets, and exceptional analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to conduct cutting-edge research in AI/ML, Cyber Security and Privacy, or HCI, with publications in the top tier (CORE A/A*) conferences and journals.
  • Experience with software development processes and coding/analytics environments (C++/C#, Python/R, and Web programming) used to develop practical applications.
  • Ability to work within collaborative cross-disciplinary teams towards achieving shared research objectives and securing research funding.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated capacity to communicate research concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with external industry and government partners.
  • Ability to foster a nurturing research environment and experience in supervising research students.
  • Demonstrated capacity to prioritise tasks and work independently and as part of a team.
