About the position

To better support people with rare cancer living in rural areas, we need to develop interventions that address their unmet needs. Research has shown that peer support programs have positive impacts of quality of life, self-efficacy, and psychological outcomes in people with cancer. A peer-support program would also address the (social) isolation rural patients experience. Currently, there is no supportive care intervention for rural patients with a rare cancer. Therefore, this project aims to develop and pilot a supportive care intervention for patients with rare cancer living in rural and remote communities.

The aim of the current project is to develop and test a supportive care intervention for people with rare cancer living in rural communities. We will achieve this in four stages:

  • Co-design of the intervention
  • Intervention development and testing
  • Intervention pilot
  • Evaluation of feasibility and acceptability
  • Skills and Experience

    To be considered for this position, you will have;

    • Completion of a PhD in psychology, public health, health sciences, social sciences or related relevant field, or equivalent qualifications or research experience.
    • Evidence of experience in effective coordination and management of research projects, including literatures reviews, data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and preparation of manuscripts for publication and reports.
    • A record of contribution to publications, conference papers and/or reports, or professional or technical contributions which provide evidence of research potential, commensurate with career stage.
    • Strong motivation for or experience in research into psychosocial oncology
    • Experience in qualitative (e.g., interviews, focus groups) and quantitative data collection methods (e.g., surveys).
    • Experience in using qualitative and quantitative data analysis software (e.g., Nvivo, SPSS).
