Contribute to research projects developing novel models and methods for Human-AI Interactions.

The Intelligent Decision Superiority Research Network (iDS) is an initiative of the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and is part of the Integrated Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) priority research theme of the Department of Defence Next Generation Technology Fund. In particular, iDS  'seeks to leverage the wider science, technology and innovation capability in academia, industry and government research agencies to develop and demonstrate future ISR concepts in; automated information processing and reasoning, distributed multi-domain networks and human and artificial intelligence interaction.'

The iDS programme has funded a University of Adelaide project 'Modelling, Monitoring and Moderating Human-AI Interactions' which is a cross-disciplinary project involving experts in both AI and human decision making and falls under the third area listed above. Funding also comes from related projects on human-machine teams in games of incomplete information.

The School of Computer Science is seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher (level B) to work on these projects for an initial period of two years, with the opportunity to extend the contract for a further year. The appointee for this position will be engaged in research activities in the areas of:

• Syntactic signal processing and modelling of the behaviours of a human analyst undertaking demanding and time-critical decision-making tasks;
• Participation in designing experiments and collection of experimental data relating to human-AI interactions;
• The application of game theory to the monitoring and shaping the interactions between human analysts and AI agents in order to achieve desirable system behaviour;
• Modelling strategic interactions for benign and adversarial machine learning operations;
• Developing computational game theoretic algorithms for cyber deception.

The appointee will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary team involving engineers, mathematicians, computer scientists and psychologists, as well as undertake personal research at an internationally competitive level. The appointee will be expected to participate in, and contribute to the School of Computer Science, School of Psychology, and other research seminar series as appropriate. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to publications in leading international journals and conferences and to contribute to time-critical project related outputs and outcomes including project reports and briefings for Defence clients.

Opportunities will be provided for conference travel, and travel for the purposes of facilitating research collaborations with Australian and international partners, as appropriate.

To be successful you will need:

• To have or about to complete a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering, computer science or related fields such as mathematics, and physics.
• Be eligible to hold a Commonwealth of Australia Department of Defence security clearance as defined at https://www1.defence.gov.au/security/clearances/about/vetting-assessment.
• Demonstrated ability in conducting and publishing high quality research on one or more of the topics related to the project topics.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with empirical research in network security and machine learning.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a professional and collegial manner, and to build rapport with all levels of academic and professional staff within a diverse and inclusive work environment.
