Opportunity for a Postdoc Research Associate to join the team at SOLES in the University of Sydney.

School of Life and Environmental Sciences: Finding solutions to major issues facing our planet-Our research in ecology and environment, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology is shaping new approaches to address a range of global challenges.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will join a small but growing research team led by Dr Alistair Senior.

The successful applicant will work on a project funded by the ARC and a USYD Horizon Fellowship on diet and the biology of ageing. The Research Associate will help to coordinate and undertake experimental data collection, analysis and interpretation and prepare publications.

This Postdoctoral Research-focused academic at Level A is expected to apply and develop their expertise in conducting research. They will conduct research and/or scholarly activities under the limited supervision of the team leader and other senior academic staff, either independently or as part of a research team.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work closely with the team leader and other team members.

  • to work independently and as part of the research team, to undertake quantitative research, including data collection, analysis and writing up of results

  • assist in the development and publication scientific papers.

  • assist in all activities related to conduct of the research including in the reviewing and updating of research protocols and related documents

  • contribute to the design and lead the execution of experiments in model organisms

  • assist in the co-supervision of students

About you

  • must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline

  • experience developing and contributing to strategic direction of research projects and evidence by producing original, high quality and independent research

  • hands on experience with genetic manipulation and laboratory research using drosophila melanogaster (is a MUST)

  • experience of studying the effects of macronutrients on lifespan, and familiarity with the associated literature

  • demonstrated ability to perform quantitative data analyses

  • ability to communicate effectively across a range of forums

  • experience in the development of academic manuscripts or report writing

  • accuracy, attention to detail and highly organized, with the ability to work according to strict deadlines and manage various demands

  • strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods 

  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
