About the opportunity

The School of Architecture, Design and Planning has a strong record in teaching architecture and architectural science and is recognized as an international leader in research in this field.

We are now recruiting a fixed-term Postdoctoral Research Associate to support a broad range of research activities within the aim and objectives of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project. The project aims to quantify the effect of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in work-from-home settings on worker comfort, adaptive behaviour, productivity and household energy use.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field research, design and perform statistical analyses, and co-author reports and peer-reviewed journal papers. The candidate will have experience and skills in developing protocols for quantitative research methods including autonomous IEQ instrumentation, internet of things, complex dataset analyses, numerical modellings, scientific communication, recruitment and management of study participants in the specific research context of this project. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Jungsoo Kim (USYD IEQ Lab), Prof Richard de Dear (USYD IEQ Lab) and Dr Dong Chen (CSIRO).

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop a methodology of studying the effect of IEQ factors on human comfort and adaptive behaviour
  • conduct field research activities, incl. site visits, IEQ measurements, occupant surveys and behaviour monitoring
  • statistically analyse field research databases applying innovative analytical approaches e.g. machine learning and AI
  • recruit and manage study participants
  • co-author research reports and journal papers
  • contribute to organising and promoting seminars and workshops.

About you

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who possesses:

  • completed (or near-completed) a PhD in Building Science, Engineering, or equivalent, with a topic clearly aligned with the project i.e. indoor environment, thermal comfort, occupant behaviour, building simulation etc.
  • detailed knowledge of the relevant literature, standards and/or rating schemes
  • superior knowledge of instrumentation/sensing technology for monitoring IEQ, occupant behaviour and/or building operational status
  • highly developed knowledge of analytical procedures and experience in analysis of large databases applying innovative techniques such as machine learning or artificial intelligence
  • track record of high-quality research publications
  • demonstrated experience in working in collaborative environments.
