About the opportunity

Established as the first computer science department in Australia, the School of Computer Science (SCS) is research-intensive and has a strong tradition of research-led teaching. The School offers undergraduate majors in computer science, information systems, data science and software development within its flagship Bachelor of Advanced Computing degree and combined degree programs with commerce and science. SCS is one of the seven schools in the Faculty of Engineering , which has a strong position within Australia and worldwide.

We are currently seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate Human-Computer Interaction to contribute to a range of research activities focused on novel interactive systems, extended reality, and human-centred artificial intelligence. In this role, you will conduct high-quality research, publish research works in top-tier conferences and journals and assist with supervising PhD/MPhil students.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • lead and contribute to research publications and present findings at relevant conferences and seminars,

  • manage the activities of a brand-new research laboratory, including selection, procurement, installation, and maintenance of equipment (e.g. motion capture systems, VR/AR headsets, sensors, etc.)

  • develop interactive prototypes and research demonstrators

  • collaborate in the planning and organisation of events, seminars, and workshops related to the research area

  • lead or participate in the preparation and submission of research grants

  • provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members and assist in their research projects.

  • engage with external stakeholders from industry and government

About you

  • a PhD (or near completion) in the relevant field of Human-Computer Interaction

  • demonstrated skills/knowledge/experience in virtual/augmented/mixed/extended reality development, quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis

  • a proven track record through literature review, qualitative and quantitative research and laboratory methods

  • demonstrated contributions to publications in top-tier conferences and journals, such as CHI, UIST, CSCW, TOCHI, IMWUT/Ubicomp, DIS, ISMAR, VR, etc.
