Postdoctoral Research Associate in Glioblastoma Cell Biology/Pharmacology

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Sydney, NEW SOUTH WALES
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

  • Full time fixed term opportunity for 2 years with the possibility of extension

  • Opportunity to work on cancer dormancy and contribute to the successful translation of a novel glioblastoma drug candidate

  • Base Salary $95,047- $105,305+ 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

An exciting post-doctoral position is available in the A/Prof Lenka Munoz’ laboratory to study the mechanism of cancer dormancy and drug tolerance in glioblastoma. Our laboratory has developed and is now translating a new class of cancer drugs into glioblastoma clinical trials. However, glioblastoma tumours contain a small population of drug-tolerant persister cells that evade the effects of drugs by entering a dormant state. To develop therapeutic approaches with full clinical impact, we need to understand the mechanism of dormancy and drug tolerance in glioblastoma. The successful applicant will work on a NHMRC-funded project focused on the delineation of dormancy mechanism and pharmacological exploitation of new targets in drug-tolerant persister cells.

Our laboratory is located in the multi-disciplinary Charles Perkins Centre (CPC) at the main campus of the University of Sydney. CPC provides an outstanding intellectual environment and access to a wide range of cutting-edge technologies in cell imaging, cytometry, genomics and proteomics. The successful applicant will have superb  opportunities to expand their expertise and/or take advantage of the diverse knowledge of the CPC community, and incorporate it into their research project.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • communicate with key internal and external stakeholders and engage with collaborators at the University of Sydney and nationally

  • undertake research using glioblastoma stem cells, molecular biology techniques (incl. CRISPR), live-cell imaging and microscopy, and a variety of pharmacological/phenotypic assays

  • demonstrate excellence in data analysis, interpretation of results and directing future experiments

  • assist with preparation of manuscripts and competitive research grants

  • support the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students

  • interpret and present data to collaborators, develop profile through presentations at conferences and seminars.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who has:

  • a PhD in cell/molecular biology or pharmacology or a related discipline (awarded or near completion)

  • background in cancer cell biology and hands-on experience conducting cell-based research, preferably with cancer stem cells

  • experience in cell/molecular biology techniques such as CRISPR, RNA interference, PCR, Western blotting and immunofluorescence

  • experience with platforms such as Incucyte, Opera Phoenix, flow cytometry to perform phenotypic assays (e.g.; viability, apoptosis, cell cycle, 3D spheroid growth)

  • familiarity with sequencing technologies and ability to analyse sequencing and -omics datasets (desirable, but not required)

  • recognised contributions to the preparation and analysis of research data, drafting reports and manuscripts

  • ability to work effectively within a team and excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both verbal and written).

To apply for this position, please address the below statements in a cover letter that you attach to your application:

  • outline your experience in performing and/or analyzing sequencing and/or -omics datasets

  • outline your current research interests and your plans for your reearch trajectory

  • what do you see as being the key current challenge in the identification and validation of novel cancer drug targets
