Full time fixed term until December 2022
Opportunity within the School of Medical Sciences to support the research of the Functional Amyloid Biology Group
Base Salary $95,047- $105,305+ 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to implement, conduct, manage and supervise ongoing research projects within the Functional Amyloid Biology Group.
Led by Professor Margaret Sunde , the Functional Amyloid Biology Group (FABLab) investigates the formation, structure and biological impact of protein amyloid fibrils that have important roles in mammals and microorganisms. Although amyloid fibrils were first identified in association with human disease including Alzheimer’s and Type 2 diabetes, protein assemblies that have similar structural features but which convey functional properties, are now widely recognised as key to processes such as programmed cell death, hormone regulation, melanin synthesis, biofilm formation and innate immunity. Current projects in the group focus on understanding the structural basis of functional amyloid assembly within the programmed cell death pathway necroptosis; targeting the functional amyloid assemblies that contribute to fungal infectivity and pathogenesis with a view to novel antifungal agents; and super-resolution imaging of pathological and functional amyloid structures.
In this role you will:
optimise the production of multiple recombinant proteins, from cloning through to purification
perform a diverse range of biochemical and biophysical experiments to characterise the structure and self-assembly properties of diverse amyloidogenic proteins
perform other support tasks associated with general laboratory experimentation, including data entry, literature searches and grant applications
write scientific communications intended for publication in refereed journals
assist to supervise graduate and honours level undergraduate students during the course of specific projects.
About you
The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who has:
a PhD in an appropriate discipline (Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology) (those who are near completion will also be considered)
ability to set up and monitor new and existing experimental projects and demonstrated laboratory skills in molecular biology techniques, protein purification and biophysical analysis, including single molecule approaches
experience in amyloid assays (desirable)
experience and demonstrated expertise in transmission electron microscopy, NMR or crystallography (desirable)
proven ability to prepare and to write scientific communications and to prepare and deliver verbal communication of data at laboratory and other scientific meetings.
This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your research profile in a well-funded, collaborative team environment.
Closing date for applications
11.59pm, 14 November 2021
Sponsorship / work rights for Australia
Visa sponsorship is only available for this position for candidates who are currently located within Australia.
