About the opportunity
The School of Biomedical Engineering and School of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering at The University of Sydney has recently established new research areas in water quality modelling and sensing; water safety and treatment; data science, artificial intelligence or machine learning methods to predict and understand water quality parameters. The Faculty of Engineering has also set up the Digital Sciences Initiative (DSI) to undertake research in both fundamental digital sciences and applied digital technologies. Part of the DSI effort is to drive the Water Resources Data Science for Water Safety in the Faculty of Engineering, a joint effort led by the School of Biomedical Engineering in collaboration with the School of Computer Science, and the School of Electrical Engineering.
We are currently seeking to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on areas such as computational data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in water quality prediction and investigation. The successful applicant will also be part of the Sydney Nano, which is a large and diverse Nano-Institute with research strengths in many areas. In addition, we have a strong applied water sensing group working on various aspects of water science research.
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will:
undertake research or scholarly activity contributing to the project's research agenda under the guidance of the lead investigator
contribute to grants writing and publications and other project outputs, including a book, journal articles, professional publications, events, and an exhibition
contribute to all research tasks, including data collection, interviews, case studies, development of the experimental protocols and supervising research students
actively participate in grant writing seminars/workshops to advance the research program in the group
work closely with water industry collaborators to provide support on water sensing device development and integration of device for APP development/machine learning.
About you
The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who has:
a PhD (or near completion) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, applied physics, physics, civil & environmental engineering, or relevant discipline
research strengths in at least two of the following areas: computational water, groundwater, hydrogeology, hydrology, and environmental engineering, predictive machine learning/AI in water environments or a similar area, applied computational science in water stress prediction, monitoring, modelling, and management of water quality, and global multi-pollutant modelling of water quality
excellent data analysis and presentation experience
experience in publishing in top-tier journals/conferences and research grants writing
excellent computer programming or software development skills
demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
good communication skills (both written and oral).
Applicants who demonstrate the following desirable criteria will be highly regarded:
experience with monitoring, modeling, and management of water quality
or experience with machine learning/AI in water sensors/devices/hydrogeology
or experience with global multi-pollutant modeling of water quality
ability to assist researchers from other disciplines as well as work with PhD students within the water sensing research group
good organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail
comprehensive experience of common online computational software and databases
strong general IT skills, including familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and HPC server.
To apply for this position, please prepare the following and attach to your application:
A one page (A4) proposal with your 2 year plan to develop computational/AI models for water resource monitoring and predictions, including any existing data resources, methods and aimed outcomes.
