About the opportunity
The University of Sydney’s team, led by Professor Paul Haber and Associate Professor Kirsten Morley in the Sydney Medical School at the Faculty of Medicine and Health, conducts clinical research that integrates neurobiological, clinical, and behavioral paradigms to conduct research investigating mechanisms and new treatments for alcohol use disorder with and without comorbid mental disorders. Extensive collaborations with clinicians, neuroscientists (preclinical and clinical), clinical psychologists, geneticists, and biostatisticians enable us to improve our understanding of treatments for the benefit of Australians.
The University of Sydney is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with an interest or background in clinical neuroscience of addictive disorders to join the National Alcohol NHMRC Synergy Research Program. The incumbent will assist in the coordination of this national interdisciplinary program of research (NHMRC Synergy), in addition to contributing to the design, analysis, and publication of clinical neuroscience research aligned with our current program.
This is a very unique opportunity for the right individual to grow as an emerging leader by working closely with national leaders in the field and contributing to the coordination of a national program of high-impact research.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Undertake analysis of clinical and/or neurobiological data and work as part of a collaborative local and national team working to guide better treatments for individuals with alcohol use disorders and comorbid mental disorders
- assist with the collection of clinical, neuroimaging and biological data as part of ongoing clinical neuroscience research projects
- write project reports, conference presentations, and journal manuscripts (including data management/preparation, statistical analysis and writing)
- assist with the preparation of grant applications (institutional and national schemes)
- contribute and develop research ideas in the clinical neuroscience of alcohol use disorders
- build and maintain a reputation for academic excellence, to expand knowledge and practice.
About you
- A PhD (graduated within the last 2-3 years or alternatively close to completing/submission) in an academic field relevant to the disciplines of neuroscience, psychology and/or pharmacology
- experience with statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS)
- a talented and organised researcher who takes initiative when completing research project tasks and is driven by a desire to contribute and solve problems
- strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to data management and analysis
- high level research methods skills, including analytical and writing skills, evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals
- strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with ability to develop and manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
- enjoy working both independently and as part of a cooperative and interdisciplinary collaborative team.
- excellent accuracy and quality when completing tasks
- hold experience collecting either clinical trial, cognitive neuroscience and/or neuroimaging data (desirable)
- demonstrated experience in quantitative research analysis relevant to either clinical trial, cognitive neuroscience or neuroimaging (desirable)
- demonstrated interest in addictive behaviors or mental disorders (desirable).
