Postdoctoral Research Associate – Ecological Modelling

  • Work with IMAS making an impactful difference to our reef ecosystems
  • Relocation assistance available for the ideal candidate
  • Full time, Fixed-Term until Dec 2027, base in Hobart

About the opportunity

The position of Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Ecological modelling is funded by a grant from the Australian Research Council Future Fellowship Project “Reef health tipping-points: triage for threatened/collapsed reef ecosystems”.

The research will directly benefit reef-dependent industries and coastal communities by providing an objective evidence-based reef health system to protect against collapse and to identify our greatest opportunities to recover vast biodiversity and economic potential for reef ecosystems.

IMAS is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for marine and Antarctic research and education. Our vision is to develop environmental understanding and facilitate sustainable development for the benefit of industry, governments and communities in Tasmania, Australia and the world.

What you’ll do:

  • Undertake innovative research using local, regional and global reef ecology datasets to understand collapse and recovery of reef ecosystems.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative concepts and propose ideas for further research.
  • Contribute to the communication of research findings to research users and the broader community.
  • Work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research team to achieve collective as well as individual outcomes.
  • Take on leadership opportunities that arise and contribute to the collegiate life of IMAS.

What we’re looking for:

  •  A PhD in Experimental Marine Ecology, Ecological Modelling or an equivalent field.
  • Strong expertise, demonstrated by high quality publications, in working with large reef community datasets and in running subtidal manipulative experiments.
  • Experience in underwater visual census techniques, underwater quantification of ecosystem functions/traits, and field experiments including generation and analysis of such datasets.
  • An excellent academic record relative to opportunity and continuing commitment to research that attracts international recognition in the field of reef ecology.
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills suited for science specialist and generalist user groups.

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $147,083 comprising base salary within the range of $108,285 to $125,712 plus 17% superannuation.
