  • Base Salary $100,717 - $134,403 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Organising for Resilience to join the University of Sydney.

The roles are primarily based on the School of Project Management but work closely with interdisciplinary teams across the Management and Organisation Sciences, Social Sciences, Urban Studies, Engineering, and Computer Science to advance research on climate change and global grand challenges.

The School of Project Management in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney is fostering interdisciplinary research and delivers world class teaching for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The program courseware is accredited by the Global Accreditation Centre of the Project Management Institute. It builds the capacity of graduates to examine the key interdependencies inherent in managing and leading complex projects, including projects in the face of climate change. The program engages with these dynamics to develop skills for effective planning, management and leadership. You will be supervised by Dr Nader Naderpajouh, to provide close collaboration across a range of disciplines including Organisation Studies, Management, Urban Studies, Engineering, Computer Science and Social Sciences. You will contribute to development of ideas in the further establishment of this research stream through their research, proposal development, and writing of academic articles. You will have the opportunity to work with interdisciplinary collaborators from other universities, government agencies and the private sector. You will be primarily based in the School of Project Management at the University of Sydney.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work closely with interdisciplinary scholars, government agencies, and private businesses
  • develop collaborative research proposals and research plans
  • conduct research, including research design, ethics approval, data collection, analysis and reporting,
  • write academic papers, industry reports, research communication articles,
  • develop and deliver research outputs, tools; present results and research translation,
  • coordinate research teams

About you

  • a PhD in a relevant field such as Management, Organization Studies, Urban Studies, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Computer Sciences, or Engineering, with a strong track record (relative to opportunities) in research on disaster management, extreme contexts, and resilience including a body of work published in their disciplinary background peer reviewed journals. Applicants who have submitted their PhD for examination or will do so in the immediate future will be considered,
  • the ability to work with industry partners in written and verbal forms and to sustain relationships with them and engage them in research,
  • capabilities in working both independently and as part of a team of researchers, to identify opportunities, and to contribute and lead to the development of papers for publication
  • outstanding interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and the ability to conduct high quality research with increasing independence and to present that work in an engaging way
  • willingness to cross collaborate with the other Post-Docs in an engaged interdisciplinary environment that is required in the face of challenges such as the ones induced by climate crisis
  • previous experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and refereed journals, and in a broad range of qualitative or quantitative data analysis.

Essential criteria (level B):

  • an understanding multidisciplinary research, and strong disciplinary track record on disciplines mentioned in the post
  • the ability to coordinate teams and timely management of research projects.

Desirable criteria - you may have (or be willing to learn):

  • the ability to write research proposals, and to lead research papers,
  • knowledge of research on project studies and how to develop papers using qualitative or quantitative analysis
  • an understanding of research on extreme contexts, climate change and resilience across different disciplines.
