The School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Science (BABS) teaches undergraduates, mentors postgraduate research students and conducts research in the disciplines of biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, environmental microbiology, medical microbiology and immunology.

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct laboratory and computational research as part of Dr Baker’s internationally funded Human Frontiers Project Grant (HFSP) to explore the origins of bacterial motility. This project is a collaboration between UNSW and the University of Edinburgh, the University of Auckland and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

The goal of the project is to engineer an early flagellar motor to place constraints on the origins of the flagellar motor.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work in the area of synthetic and structural biology as a contract researcher to resurrect ancient flagellar motors and monitor their subsequent adaptation in the laboratory.

This position is open to international applicants and visa sponsorship is a possibility for the right candidate. Applicants should note visa waiting times for Australia are typically in excess of 6 months at the current time.


About the role

  • $100K - $107K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Full time (35 hours)

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to Dr Matthew Baker and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Genomic engineering of bacterial genomes (deletions, substitutions).
  • Molecular biology and biochemistry for bacterial culture and cloning.
  • Phylogenetics of bacterial proteins and ancestral reconstruction.
  • Measurement of bacterial swimming via swim plating and microscopy.
  • Maintain an accurate and well-kept laboratory notebook.
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals and progress reporting to other researchers and industry partners.
  • Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • PhD in a related area (eg. biochemistry, synthetic biology, microbiology, biophysics)
  • Research experience and technical expertise in synthetic biology.
  • Demonstrated experience and technical expertise in microbial genetics and microbial bioinformatics.
  • Experience in directed or experimental evolution.
  • Demonstrated experience in microscopy.
  • Track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team, and at times with minimal supervision, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
