Position overview

ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as that of the developing world. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the Research School of Psychology, the ANU Medical School, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the Research School of Population Health (RSPH). These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.  

A unique and exciting opportunity exists for a part-time (0.8FTE) Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow to join the RSPH Centre for Mental Health Research, for a new suicide prevention research project evaluating safe spaces as an alternative to the emergency department for people experiencing emotional distress. The position is situated within the Lived Experience Research Unit, and lived experience of suicidal thoughts/behaviour or mental health issues is required expertise for the position. This may be personally or as a carer, family member or friend. The Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow will take day-to-day responsibility for the management of research activities associated with the project, in collaboration with the Chief Investigator and Partner team. Key responsibilities will include supervision of the Research Officer, co-ordination of ethics applications and project materials, management of data collection and analysis, collaboration with partner organisations and others with lived experience in co-design and co-analysis activities, and the preparation of reports and academic outputs. The position would suit someone with experience in co-production, participatory action research, implementation science or similar, in a suicide prevention or mental health research context.

The Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow will work as part of a large, multi-disciplinary project team, reporting to A/Prof Michelle Banfield at ANU. The successful candidate will be required to liaise with researchers across a large number of academic and partner organisations and will need to be highly organised and an outstanding communicator. The position is funded until June 2024.
