Overview

ECU plays a key role in a world-first National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) in Prostate Cancer Survivorship.

More than 10 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every hour and around 200,000 Australian men are living with prostate cancer today. The CRE in Prostate Cancer Survivorship will translate research into action across four main themes for the benefit of men diagnosed. The themes include exercise medicine, psychosocial and psychosexual health, the economic costs of prostate cancer and geographic inequalities in prostate cancer outcomes.

The Exercise Medicine Research Institute is a successful and expanding research group focusing on the role of exercise as medicine in the prevention and management of chronic disease, encompassing outcomes relating to functional, physiological, cardiometabolic and psychosocial health. We have excellent facilities and extensive research activities in a collaborative and collegial working environment. For the past fifteen years, we have been at the forefront of research examining how exercise acts as a medicine to improve the lives of men with prostate cancer. Our reputation in exercise and cancer research is internationally recognised.

The successful applicant will work within our team conducting molecular and cellular research of the mechanisms by which exercise impacts cancer biology.

To be successful in this role you must have:

• A PhD in an appropriate field (applications can be accepted from current PhD candidates, but the PhD must be submitted prior to commencement of the contract)
• Experience in planning and conducting scientific research
• Knowledge and skills in animal and human research methods
• Demonstrated capacity in developing prostate cancer cell line culture and analysis, including immunocytochemistry, ELISA, Western blot, RT-PCR, and real-time cellular analysis (RTCA)
• Research experience in myokines and extracellular vesicles
• Phlebotomy certification in Western Australia
• Excellent scientific writing skills with a demonstrated record of research publication
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills
• Demonstrated capacity to manage projects and budgets

This full time, fixed term position attracts remuneration of $102,253pa - $120,814pa plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
