Overview
The School of Science has a strong track record of excellence in teaching and research in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Conservation Biology, Ecological and Biological Sciences, Environmental Management and Sustainability. We offer a choice of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and have active research programs across all disciplines. Based at the Joondalup campus of ECU, the School of Science aims to maintain a high level of teaching and research achievements through recruitment of new staff.

The Role
The Centre for Ecosystem Management, Edith Cowan University in collaboration with the Water Corporation of Western Australia is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work in the areas of modelling fire related impacts in drinking water catchments of southwestern Australia.

Climate change, combined with forestry and mining practices, a growing population and increasing demand for water in southwestern Australia will pose significant challenges for fire and water resource management, for communities and authorities. A new and emerging area of research activities seeks to understand how fires in water catchments affect the ability to manage water quality; specifically, how we monitor, and how we can better anticipate impacts across spatial and temporal scales.

The candidate will integrate outcomes of fire history and fire behaviour modelling, post-fire soil erosion modelling and water quality impacts and contaminant flows into a cohesive, holistic predictive model that can be used to develop risk mitigation strategies. The successful candidate will have a role in supervising HDR students involved in different aspects of the project as well as designing specific experiments to measure soil erosion and water quality impacts.

Skills and Experience
Prospective candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in water chemistry, soil science, fire ecology, or related fields, extensive experience with conceptual and mathematical modelling, experience with some kind of spatial analytics and programming, good interpersonal communication and presentation skills, and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Knowledge of Australian terrestrial ecosystems will be an advantage.

Benefits & Remuneration
This full-time, fixed-term position (3 years) attracts remuneration of $99,043 - $117,312 (ALEVB) plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
