About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) at The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology to be based at the Plant Breeding Institute on the University’s Camden Campus. SOLES has an international reputation for education and research in agricultural systems, with well-funded external research collaborations across broadacre and horticultural industries.

The successful applicant will bring expertise in plant genetics with a focus on molecular biology and associated disciplines. The successful applicant will have a sound track record of research publication, demonstrating clear potential to become a leader in their field. It is expected that the candidate’s research background and future program will focus on manipulation of crop genomes to establish functional hybrid systems in self-pollinated crop species. They will have experience in teaching, research and publication commensurate with an early-career scientist on a rising trajectory. The successful applicant show a willingness to contribute to current research programs, focusing on the establishment of functional hybrid systems in crops. They should have a track-record of successful collaboration nationally and articulate a vision for potential collaboration within SOLES, across the University of Sydney and beyond.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work with academic staff, students and technical staff in the laboratory, greenhouse and field to establish functional hybrid systems in target crops

  • conduct experiments, practicals, and/or tutorials in accordance with scientific protocols

  • plan, conduct, analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative experiments that progress the overall research objectives

  • contribute to diverse scientific documentation and applications, including research publications, research grants and research reports

  • maintain a clean and safe work environment, ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements including the safe and appropriate storage and disposal of hazardous substances

About you

  • a PhD in an appropriate area (plant breeding, plant genetics, molecular genetics, molecular biology)

  • knowledge of molecular cytogenetics and/or genome editing would be an advantage

  • molecular genetics experience (cereal crops would be an advantage), with a track record of high-quality research publications as first or senior author

  • advanced computational skills

  • experience in the conduct and management of laboratory and glasshouse research 

  • experience in field-based research would be an advantage

  • demonstrated understanding and experience of relevant work health and safety issues, including laboratory, glasshouse and field-based work

  • a clear vision of how your planned research would complement and/or enrich the existing strengths and expertise of the School

  • previous experience of successful collaborative projects would be an advantage

  • excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication and time management skills.
