The SDR Hub , established by the UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice in 2022, aims to connect knowledge and people to make small steps towards big changes. It creates safe spaces for changemakers—from government, business, and wider society—to plan pragmatic action for a sustainable low-carbon future informed by knowledge and insights from across the world. The SDR Hub builds on diverse research, education, and knowledge exchange partnerships aligned with global sustainable development commitments to drive forward the implementation of innovative and transformative workstreams. Currently active in over 20 countries, the SDR Hub works closely with decision-makers across government, international institutions, local communities, and the private and non-private sectors to create new approaches to decision-making as well as bold and intelligent reforms.


Why This Role Matters:


The SDR Hub works closely with decision makers in governments around the world and in the private sector. We specialise in high impact work that is directly linked to decision making processes nationally and internationally. We are an interdisciplinary and agile international team that supports high-level policy change in the public and private sector. We have seen unprecedented growth in demand for our expertise recently and Plastics or Waste Specialist is vital to build out the interdisciplinary team of applied researchers and government experts. The successful applicant will have a unique opportunity to directly influence international debate in a range of topics as well as building out, growing and driving their own body of work.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow reports to the SDR Hub Director and has no direct reports.

This position can be performed remotely and can be based in any country where the applicant has work rights.

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include (but are not limited to):

  • Contribute independently and as a team member in collaborative interdisciplinary research concerning topics across the areas of interest especially related to waste and/or plastic production, waste management, circular economy, waste accounts, and trade and statistic.
  • Develop and deliver waste and plastic accounts in collaboration with colleagues at the SDR Hub.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across all relevant projects within the Hub to support the broad spectrum of work being undertaken.
  • Disseminate findings to create impact which is globally and locally recognised by peers through the preparation of reports, journal articles, conferences and presentations, and publicly accessible knowledge products that advance the utilisation of disciplinary knowledge.
  • Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team (as per the norms of the discipline) and design research projects.
  • Possess a willingness and capacity to travel for work up to 10 weeks per year.

Skills and Experience:

  • A PhD in a related discipline and/or relevant work experience across either waste management, circular economy, waste accounts, production, consumption and waste related trade statistics and relevant policy.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, create innovative solutions to complex problems and build effective relationships.
  • Ability to work in Spanish or French is highly desirable.
