  • Base salary range: $106,775 – $116,709 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation

About the team

The Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) is a collaboration that brings together four of Australia's leading research organisations working in and around the Indian Ocean:

  • Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (Fisheries)
  • Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS)
  • Oceans & Atmosphere (CSIRO)
  • UWA Oceans Institute

The collaboration includes the development of multi-disciplinary IOMRC collaborative research initiatives that will significantly advance Australia's marine science capacity, capability, and profile.

About the opportunity

As the appointee you will, under broad direction, oversee the supervision and line management of the IOMRC staff team by establishing and managing processes and projects to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the IOMRC buildings, including compliance, to enhance the IOMRC research partnership and assist with achieving strategic goals.

You will also manage the operational administration and day to day activities at both the IOMRC Waterman’s Bay and IOMRC Crawley research sites with guidance from the key stakeholders. In addition, you will liaise with IOMRC partners, UWA Campus Management and others for the fabric and operation of the two IOMRC buildings.

About you 

The prospective Operations Manager for the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) will have a strong foundation in marine science and a track record of success in complex research environments. Your academic background includes relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent competency, and ideally, a postgraduate qualification. You bring substantial experience, showcasing your expertise in overseeing diverse laboratory research, including molecular biology, marine ecology, engineering and oceanography.

You will have a keen understanding of legislative and regulatory requirements related to occupational health and safety, biosafety, biosecurity and animal ethics. Your proactive approach and initiative shine through, demonstrating your capability to work independently and manage a diverse operational area.

Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, along with effective consultation and negotiation abilities are integral to the position. Your collaborative approach will contribute to a positive experience for researchers and staff at IOMRC.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent competency
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification (desirable)
  • Substantial relevant experience at an appropriate level including demonstrated experience in complex research environments
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in aquatic research and diverse laboratory research (i.e., molecular biology, marine ecology, engineering, oceanography)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of relevant legislative and regulatory requirements in the areas of occupational health and safety, biosafety and biosecurity, and animal ethics
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and build effective working teams
  • Demonstrated ability to build capability through training and coaching
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and high level of consultation and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to long term planning and key strategic direction
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and manage a considerable area

Note: Some after hours work and a current “C” class driver’s licence are required for this position.
