The Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute). Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, skin pathogens and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Our researchers come from diverse backgrounds, including discovery research and basic scientists, clinician researchers, epidemiologists, public health physicians and microbiologists.

About the Role
The Research Officer will work closely with NCAS Director Professor Karin Thursky, colleagues and chief investigators to execute the large and complex project specified within the successful MRFF- Research Data Infrastructure (MRFF RDI) grant: Appropriate Antimicrobial Use: Scaling Surveillance Using Digital Health (Funding from 30 June 2022 and ends on 31 May 2026).

The NCAS MRFF- RDI Research Officer will hold an academic University of Melbourne appointment to facilitate co-ordination of research and training, whilst also providing administrative support to the NCAS.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead research project management to execute the aims and milestones of the MRFF grant Appropriate Antimicrobial Use: Scaling Surveillance Using Digital Health.
  • Supporting the partnering research leads; Guidance Group at Melbourne Health, Department of General Practice, Department of Veterinary Biosciences, Centre for Digital Transformation of Health, RMIT School of Computing Technologies and the National Centre for Infections in Cancer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
  • Managing the financial operations of the MRFF RDI grant including provision of reports to the NCAS Director, Academic Centre and relevant funding bodies as required.
  • Managing all MRFF RDI recruitments (write PDs and work with, finance and IT and on budgets, contracts, and on boarding).
  • Providing effective supervision of research support staff.
  • Providing effective supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects and supervise or co-supervise Research Higher Degree and Honours students (including as a co-supervisor or advisory panel member).


About You
You possess strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to be professional and relate effectively with a range of people across all levels of the organisation. You will have demonstrated experience in the supervision or co-supervision and mentoring of undergraduate students and other staff where appropriate.

You will also have:

  • Completion of an under-graduate degree with experience in in Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences or other relevant discipline e.g., software engineering; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated ability to expertly apply research methodologies and quantitative/ qualitative data analysis.
  • Demonstrated track record in independent and team based research
  • Demonstrated track record in research management roles

In addition to the above, the following are essential for a Level B Appointment:

  • PhD (>2 years post-doctorate) in relevant area (i.e. health sciences, health services research and/or digital health) or equivalent professional qualification. 
  • Developing research profile at a national level as evidenced by:
    • Identification of sources of funding to support individual or collaborative projects relating to teaching, research and leadership practice in the discipline
    • Developing publication record in high-impact peer reviewed journals
