The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences has an enviable research record and is the University of Melbourne’s largest faculty in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and professional staff, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate (including research higher degree) students and the conduct of basic and applied research. The Faculty’s annual revenue is $628m with approximately 55% of this income related to research activities.

About the Role
The Medical Research Institutes (MRI) Management Accountant provides high-quality, expert accounting guidance, advice and support to the leadership teams of a number of medical research institutes, both internal and external.  Accounting covers the full spectrum of strategic, operational, research and philanthropic funding types.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyse data, both financial and operational, as the basis for preparation of ad hoc and planned reports to support decision making and the development of business cases
  • Track trends and provide forecasts on both operational and financial metrics affecting the school resources
  • Lead and manage compliance reviews as required to ensure accurate and timely reporting is provided
  • Provide expert advice, and support to stakeholders on budget planning, preparation of budget input and supporting schedules, operation of budget models (such as salary templates) and problem solving complex issues that may arise

About You

A mix of strong technical skills, interpersonal skills and business knowledge are needed in this multi-dimensional role. You will have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders in Research Institutes, schools of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (FMDHS) and the broader faculty.

You will have:

  • A degree with 3 to 4 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training and working toward or completed professional body recognition. (eg: CA or CPA)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to present information clearly and to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to apply initiative, judgement and problem solving skills and to integrate multiple perspectives and competing pressures
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a broader team.
