The Media and Communications Team plays a pivotal role in managing and advancing Flinders' reputation as an innovative, world-leading university. About the Role 

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Media and Communications team as the Media Manager. The role is responsible for leading the Media Relations team and for developing and implementing the University’s media strategy.

As the Media Manager, you will be providing leadership and direction for proactive and reactive news coverage and media events and liaising with colleges and portfolios across the organisation to promote the University’s excellence in student-centred education, research innovation and alumni achievement. The key purpose of the role is to proactively identify media opportunities to build Flinders’ connection with the community and stakeholders.

Some of the key responsibilities of the position are:

  • Developing and implementing the university’s media strategy to promote Flinders’ achievements and deepen the university’s connection with stakeholders and the wider public.

  • Identifying and managing complex issues, developing appropriate communication strategies to mitigate and manage.

  • Managing media relationships to drive value and enhance earned media coverage of University strategic priorities.

  • Providing high-quality media relations advice, services, and support to the Vice-Chancellor’s office and stakeholders, including staff and students, across the university.

About You 

With a degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or comparable experience, you have a commitment to excellence and the principles of continuous improvement.  As the successful candidate, you have the ability to work independently, (as well as working collaboratively as part of a team), exercise initiative, judgement and well-developed problem-solving skills. You are passionate in fostering a positive workplace culture, working as part of a close-knit team of professionals.

Some of the key position capabilities of the role include:

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, and ability to convey complex concepts in an easily understood manner.

  • A finely honed news sense and understanding of the local, national and international media landscape.

  • ability to lead a team to deliver compelling, cross platform media content.

  • Excellent analytic skills and experience in harnessing data to drive improvement.

  • Strong risk identification and management skills.
