Under broad direction, the Media Advisor will play an important role in increasing Flinders University’s profile, reputation and brand by engaging key audiences across multiple platforms.
This is a key role working across the University to raise awareness of Flinders, its teaching and its research by promoting the University’s experts and achievements to the media, and through online and social platforms. With a flair for identifying an interesting story and the ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear and compelling manner, the incumbent will work closely with colleagues across the University to develop newsworthy stories. This includes the creation of strategies to increase awareness though the crafting of not just the traditional press release, but the accompanying associated social media, blog and web story, all with the aim of driving engagement and awareness of the University and its expertise.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Media Advisor is accountable for:

  • Liaising with academic staff and external stakeholders (i.e. Australian Science Media Centre and other partners) to identify and maximise media and promotional opportunities, locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Researching, writing and distributing news releases and the associated online collateral, including twitter and Facebook posts, blogs, editorials and web stories.
  • Researching, writing, producing and delivering promotional media and other outcomes such as fact sheets and OCME publications.
  • Contributing to the editing and management of online news platforms (InDaily, Flinders news’ blog) as well as contributing content to internal communication platforms (Flinders in Touch).
  • As required, working with the Creative and Digital Content Producers to develop video and other collateral to accompany media strategies.
  • Supporting Flinders staff in their engagement with the media and conducting media training as required.
  • Tracking and reporting on media performance and audience reach.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • A degree in journalism, communications, public relations or comparable experience.
  • Demonstrated skill in researching and writing media releases and editorial features, in a variety of ‘voices’.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in developing associated digital and online content to accompany media stories, including twitter and Facebook posts, blogs, and web stories.
  • Demonstrated high level written communication skills, including for social media
  • High level oral communication skills and demonstrated experience in engaging successfully with a diverse and complex range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of, or experience working in, the higher education sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as working collaboratively as part of a team, exercise initiative, judgement and well-developed problem solving skills, and interpret and apply relevant policies and procedures.
  • A commitment to excellence and the principles of continuous improvement and ability to develop and deliver plans, measure outcomes and report on potential improvements for the future.
