Mechanical Engineer - Engineering Services

  • Employment Type: Full time (35 hours per week)
  • Duration: 10-month parental leave cover
  • Remuneration: Level 9 $138,171 -$146,613 (depending on experience) + 17% super + leave loading
  • Location: Kensington, NSW (hybrid flexible working)

Why your role matters:

The Mechanical Engineer role is responsible for providing technical advice on the operational direction and engineering design expertise for all facets of the UNSW Estate Management portfolio.

UNSW has a wide services network spanning across several campus locations with diverse systems providing reliable, efficient, and leading-edge technologies in electrical, mechanical, BMS and hydraulic plant and infrastructure. The advanced mechanical systems located around campus include central energy plants, accurate temperature-controlled spaces to support critical microscopic research, pressurised systems to maintain containment in PC2 and PC3 laboratories and many other forms of HVAC systems available.

The Mechanical Engineer role is dynamic and plays a key function within Engineering Services. Working collaboratively with mechanical consultants, contractors and external stakeholders the role is fundamental in the design, installation and operations of all systems.

The role of Mechanical Engineer reports to the Senior Manager, Engineering Services and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice and information regarding mechanical building services and control systems relating to design and infrastructure.
  • Develop practical solutions to remedy performance shortfalls, or to enhance the performance levels and reliability of mechanical building services and control systems.
  • Manage outsourced maintenance and repairs as appropriate and in accordance with best practice and UNSW Standards.
  • Oversee project work ensuring it incorporates cost effective, energy efficient, sustainable and low maintenance design in accordance with whole of life considerations.
  • Ensure that capital equipment installation and refurbishment projects, and the commissioning and testing of mechanical building services and control systems is effectively and efficiently managed and delivered whilst complying with the University’s long-term strategic asset management objectives.
  • Manage services upgrade projects, communicating effectively and regularly with all stakeholders on the expectation of project direction, project time line and objectives.
  • Ensure the UNSW mechanical building services and control systems testing and compliance program is effectively and efficiently managed and delivered, identifying and monitoring impacts of the control systems design and selection on capital.
  • Brief and coordinate with consultants, contractors, mechanical supervisors and trade staff from initial planning and design through to delivery, testing and commissioning in an effective manner.

Skills and Experience

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent competency, including demonstrated relevant experience with engineering projects in a complex and diverse environment.
  • Extensive industry experience as an engineer in the field of building services, HVAC systems, or similar.
  • Exceptional operational and project management skills in building services, service design programs, work assessments, quality assurance, commissioning and operations.
  • Expert knowledge and effective management of Occupational Health and Safety issues relating to all mechanical services construction, operation and maintenance, with particular emphasis on protection of public health.
  • Working knowledge of relevant mechanical codes, such as NSW Codes of Practice, AS1668, AS3666, Australian Standards, OHS 2001, BCA etc.
  • Advanced negotiation and problem-solving skills and a proven capacity to exercise initiative and be proactive in respect of project and team management issues.
  • Strong financial management skills with the ability to deal with multiple projects at one time.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience in researching, analysing and preparing succinct reports.
  • Proven ability to establish, build and maintain strong professional relationships within a diverse environment.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer applications including MS Word and Excel, Outlook and relevant engineering and design software systems (eg AutoCAD).
